Annotation

This comparative assay of compliments and other evaluative comments in French and Lebanese Arabic is based on naturally-occurring interactions, video-recorded during dinner invitations amid friends and relatives. The assay centers on two specific types of compliments linked to being offered and savoring food. The description not only reckons with the linguistic forms of assessments and compliments (on the syntactic and lexical levels), but also with vocal productions like “hm”, as well as gestures, mimics, gaze and other multimodal resources. This article first debates the chief aspects of former research on compliments that is employed as reference points for this inquiry. It then proposes the employed corpora and methodology. The last part of the article is devoted to the interactional multimodal assay of specific types of compliments linked to being offered food in the two corpora.
