L. investigates some epistemic modal operators in English (especially 'seem'/'appear', progressive, 'lurk'). The strength or source of evidence indicated by such operators calls for a description in terms of epistemological principles and conversational postulates so that an account of the wellformedness of the sentences in which they occur cannot remain purely syntactic.
