Annotation

This paper explores the presence of Italian in the linguistic landscape (LL) of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Quite amazingly, Italian is rather visible, and it might even be the most employed European language after English. After a general introduction on the Italian language and Malaysia, covering the latter's LL, the paper continues to outline the used method, which made use of both a quantitative and a qualitative approach, and the obtained results. Then follows a brief debate on the recognisability of written Italian by people who do not know the language and an assay of the actual examples of recorded Italian. The paper closes with an in-depth debate on the reasons that explain the relative popularity of Italian and some general conclusions.
