This paper tries to foster understanding of neoliberalism through discourse analysis of how the ideology is validated and/or dismissed by Japanese ‘salarymen’ debating work and business in Japan. The predominant orientation which participants express toward Japan’s neoliberalization are: affirmation, ambivalence, and neoliberalism qua neoconservatism. Attention is centered on the insecurities, contradictions, or ironies participants explicitly or implicitly utter.
