This paper explores how third-party complaints were responded to by counsellors on a men’s relationship-counselling helpline. The third-party complaints constituted callers’ reasons for call. Unlike in other explored settings, counsellors’ responses did not end in an immediate shift away from callers’ complaints. This was mainly because, following counsellors’ non-affiliative responses, callers often engaged in work to pursue affiliation.
