Many empirical research shows that exposure to the stereotypic and oftentimes threatening portrayals of race/ethnicity in the media predict a broad set of unfavorable intergroup outcomes. This inquiry expands this work by experimentally exploring the role of emotions in this process. Specifically, a 2 (Immigration Threat: Present/Absent) × 2 (Ingroup Emotion Endorsement: Present/Absent) + 1 (Control Group) experimental design examines the impact of exposure to immigration news stories on group-level emotions and intergroup behaviors. Findings shows that exposure to threatening immigration news coverage indirectly affects intergroup outcomes via group-level emotions. Exposure to immigration news indirectly generates active and passive harming behaviors via feelings of contempt. These results supply an important first step in grasping a wider array of media-linked intergroup processes and effects.
