Annotation
A report of code-switching should be a direct result of a comprehension of representation and processing in the individual mind, rather than a separate domain. Given the lack of such an account, most studies have evolved suppositions strictly within a specific research domain. This article tries to apply to code-switching a rather well-evolved account of the multilingual mind, the MOGUL framework, within which more specific accounts can be evolved. After briefly resuming the framework, this article describes representation and processing as realized in MOGUL, centering on aspects having special pertinence to code-switching, covering social factors involved in switching but as seen in terms of their place in a cognitive system. The article then displays how an auspicious approach to code-switching can be deduced from this general framework. Some specific examples of code-switching are assayed, albeit the main aim is to display the merits of a wider viewpoint.
