This inquiry explores whether and how second language (L2) listeners diverge in how contrastive accents impact their encoding and representation of a discourse, as compared to native speakers. The results propose that L2 listeners’ non-native performance in processing contrastive accents may be ascribed at least in part to a difference in the profundity of processing of the information transferred by contrastive accents.
