Annotation
There is a debate between advocates of free pragmatic enrichment and those who assert that any pragmatic contribution to explicature is moderated by a covert linguistic indexical. This study makes the case that, for a theory of the processes involved in expression understanding, the free pragmatic enrichment account is essential. It farther claims that the criticism of free enrichment that warrants at least some indexicalist accounts rests on a mistaken supposition that it is the semantic component of the grammar (linguistic competence) that is responsible for supplying truth-conditional content (explicature).
