Annotation
The American Midwest is an area that stretches over giant distances. Yet it appears that the Norwegian language in this whole area has some resemblances, especially at the lexical level. Comparisons of three kinds of vocabulary across the whole area, as well as across time, building on accounts in the prior literature from Haugen (1953) onwards, are performed. The results of these comparisons persuade the authors that it is warranted to refer to this language as one lexically defined dialect, labeled lexicolect here.
