L. deals with the relationship between conventional and individual aspects of speech activity. He analyses the consequences for communication when individual factors are reduced and constitutive conditions changed or distorted. In this framework the ritualized element in speech is characterized by restricted individuality and as being the consequence of a specific over-conventionalization. This concept is developed and illustrated.
