Annotation

This inquiry tries to unite Raskin’s (1985) and Davies’ (2011) methodological approaches to political jokes to explore Greek political jokes targeting politicians and diffused during the first 4 years of the Greek crisis. The assay distinguishes what Greek people perceive as politicians’ major inanities, viz. their errors that hinder them to accomplish their roles ‘fitly’. The peculiarities of the sociopolitical context in Greece and, most weightily, the sharp defect of political trust amid Greeks permit an interpretation of the jokes under inspection as expressions of disenchantment and letdown with politicians and the political system in general, and as demonstrations of lenient, tricksy bellicosity towards them. The inquiry discloses that the charges evoked in the jokes against politicians catch and process very precisely most of the sides and reasons of political suspicion in Greece.
