This search problematizes the connection of non-ethnic attributes (in most hitherto studied ethnic humour) and the ethnic identity concept, just as their link to a specific kind of society, trying to distinguish between ‘ethnically-empty’ functional joke scripts and real ethnic joke scripts that are linked to the target's ethnic identity. It so expands ethnic humour theory. Joke data (N=369) stem from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Albania.
