Annotation

Bantu noun classes serve both semantic and pragmatic functions. Non-canonical uses of the noun class system in the Bantu language Bena are explored in a discourse context. The noun class role in reference tracking is more intricate than simply employing nominal concord. Noun classes can employed too to raise connotative meaning. Noun class membership is somewhat fluid, and prefixing elements are referentially meaningful.
