Annotation

Impromptu invitations elicited by ways of polar negative-interrogatives in Greek elicit slowed acceptances. Their explanation lies in the clashing preferences built in the polar negative-interrogative construction when employed to issue impromptu invitations. Invitees utilize the slowed acceptance pattern as an interactional solution for cross-cutting preferences. Sequential patterns are elicited via an interaction of grammar and social action.
