A pivotal question about the encoding of evidential notions in human languages is whether they derive from pragmatics or morpho-syntax. This article handles some dares posed by a specific verbal paradigm with evidential semantics in Romanian, the so-called presumptive mood. The essence of the presented assay is that a syntactic induction makes better prognoses for this class than just a pragmatic clarification.
