This paper debates the binary opposition between speaker commitment and non-commitment. Performative epistemic assesment conveys commitment, proposing reportative markers does not. Pure inferential markers are closer to the former than to the latter. Equivocal evidential markers in the domain of indirect evidentiality are taken to transfer non-commitment. The notions of speaker involvement are operationalized at the propositional and interactional level. Involvement attribution by the hearer is a considerable tool.
