Annotation

In conflict discourse, silence at transition relevance position points to problems. This paper states that observable silences in domestic English lingua franca conflict talk are handled by the interlocutors as marking the following: 1) shunning self-incriminating second pair-parts, 2) opposing laughable-initiated changes of footing, 3) sustained disagreement, 4) taking offence, or 5) unsuccessful persuasion. Silences are handled as repairables by the non-silent party. Conversation analysis is apposite to the detailed inquiry of silence-in-interaction.
