This paper centers on the pragmatic means employed at the start of blog comments. It provides insights into the interaction between commenters and blog authors. The inquiry is based on the Birmingham Blog Corpus http://www.webcorp.org.uk/blogs. It proposes a novel approach to the inquiry of speech acts in large corpora. It reveals medium-specific uses of expressive speech acts in blog comments.
