Familiarisers should not be considered solely as plain terms of address but as discourse or pragmatic markers as well. Familiarisers are very usual in the expression of young speakers where they are frequently used to strengthen group identity. Man, brother, mate and boy are the most usual in London teen talk. The findings here validate that the position in the C-unit of these forms is directly linked to their pragmatic function.
