This conversation analytic inquiry centers on the use of aiyou-prefacing in Mandarin. Aiyou often emerges in contexts where parties champion the epistemic upper hand. This study claims the role of aiyou as a way of stating epistemic authority/primacy. It draws on 35 h of spontaneous conversations gathered in China.
