Annotation

This article is the first to have examined code-switching in a planned language. As code-switching points out speakers' bent to incorporate other-language material in their speech, exploring it can supply notable insight into contact-induced impact from other languages, particularly English. The article proposes that the influence of English does not spare the planned language, yet also that there is a rather little extent of impact of English on Esperanto. Code-switching, covering the insertion of English words and phrases, is displayed to turn up in a restricted variety of pragmatic functions. The little extent of code-switching can be credited to speakers' evolved metalinguistic awareness, features like linguistic loyalty and shared community norms.
