This paper presents a unitary relevance-theoretic account of the multifunctionality of the English discourse connective ‘after all’. ‘After all’ inflicts a constraint on context selection and settles a contrariness between opposite assumptions. The unitary account clarifies why ‘after all’ emerges in both concession and justification. The distinct context types induce the plural uses and their distinct cognitive effects.
