Disagreeing is a dispreferred option in the Hong Kong Language Education classroom. Disagreements are further alleviated by shunning negative gestures or head movements. Positive gestures and head movements are employed to encourage students to interact. Generating positive affect in the classroom (and lowering the face threat to the students) appears to be the teachers' priority. This conduct appears conventionalised within this community of practice.
