General definitions of Information-Structural (IS) categories (topic, focus) imply circular methodology. IS-categories are epiphenomenal effects of heterogenous linguistic devices. Various intersubjective, interactional and grammatical categories prompt IS-readings. Case studies from English, Hebrew, Burmese and Quechua show this diversity. The paper presents a bottom-up approach to IS as typology of categories that set off various interpretations.
