This study links oral poetry formulas and cognitive linguistic constructions. Speech introductions in six versions of an epic in Serbo-Croatian are assayed. A prototypical form of this construction is posited. Singers employ the structure otherwise when singing naturally and when dictating. The formulaic patterns are not solely molded by metrical conditions, but also by meaning and function.
