Annotation

This paper explores how racialized language in the Northern Italian Veneto region is occasionally executed in ways that completely or moderately exclude particular migrant groups, while concurrently generating chummy inclusion spaces for Italians. By codeswitching from Standard Italian to Venetan, speech participants talk to audiences who are supposed to “share” this code, but when their conversations topics are migrants, such changes can also set exclusionary stances vis-a-vis the latter. This paper shows that conversant analytic dichotomies like exclusion/inclusion and insider/outsider are deficient, and it presents more processual and gradual participation approaches.
