Annotation

Ioway and Otoe-Missouria tribal members now depend on texts to master their Chiwere heritage language. Literacy has become the main way of language socialization and revitalization. Chiwere orthographies and literacy are involved in enculturation projects. Missionaries employed literacy as a way of “civilizing” Chiwere speakers. Chiwere language revitalization fosters nostalgic concepts of traditional culture.
