Annotation

The indigenous languages of the Northern Kimberley region of Western Australia cover a single genetic family (Worrorran), with three branches, and widespread multilingualism across them. Languages are comprehended to have been directly instated in the landscape by ancestral creator figures. On that basis language difference – particularly in vocabulary - constitutes a significant aspect of social identity. In the midpoint of the Worrorran region there has been structural convergence due to spread across the three branches, but persistent lexical divergence. This points out that both the multilingualism there and the socioculturally motivated preservation of lexical difference are time-honored.
