This paper examines variations in the rhetorical structure and linguistic features of research article abstracts in three sub-fields of one applied discipline: marine engineering. The findings point out that English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructors should reckon with sub-disciplinary choices when teaching academic writing so that students can make well-grounded selections when writing in their particular sub-field.
