This article assays an up to now unnoticed semantic change process in Chinese, in which lexical (adjectival) materials evolve into superlative operators, and then change into definiteness markers. It asserts that frequent association of gradable adjectives with superlative implication leads to pragmatic reinforcing in which the superlative implication conventionally enters the literal meaning.
