This paper critically revises some of the crucial issues in agreement study, centering on typological approaches to agreement, the role of agreement in settling and preserving reference, and the apparition of agreement diachronically. It indicates the interplay of semantic, pragmatic and syntactic factors in molding the way agreement systems function.
