This inquiry collated bilingual learners’ selection of English and Putonghua learning targets and explored their language attitudes and identities in relation to these two ‘great’ languages, both of which have played notable roles in colonial and post-colonial Hong Kong. This inquiry advocates the chance of practising a World Englishes-oriented framework to the study of Chinese, given its enhancing global perceptibility, linguistic variation and elaborate employment around the world.
