Annotation

Response particles control intersubjectivity. This conversation analytic inquiry states that with German eben (“exactly”), speaker A locally assents with the instantly earlier turn of B (the “confirmable”) and settles a second indexical link: A connects B’s confirmable to a position A herself had already shown (the “anchor”). Via asserting temporal priority, eben speakers handle a just-worded position as obvious and mark independence.
