Many people mention meeting mental imagery (visual, auditory, and/or kinetic) when they understand verbal metaphors. This study argues that mental imagery is not a vital element in the understanding of language, whether literal or metaphorical, but it is frequently automatically switched on in the minds of hearers or readers as a spin-off of their linguistic and pragmatic processes.
