This paper examines pronunciation and comprehension in the English as a lingua franca (ELF) context of international pilot–air traffic controller radiotelephony communication. It argues that L1-affected pronunciation is one of the main factors inducing speaker miscommunication, together with listener unfamiliarity with the pronunciation.
