This inquiry detects the change of the modal adverb perhaps and its surpassed rivals (i.e., peradventure, percase, and perchance) via the history of English. The findings for the progressively ascendant perhaps show the grammaticalization of its epistemic function as a modal adverb and more novel (inter)subjectification to cover pragmatic meanings regarding the relational basis between speaker and addressee.
