M. argues that a reconsideration of ancient rhetoric could be useful to linguistic pragmatics, and proposes to examine the sequence locution-illocution-perlocution starting from its last term: illocutionary act selection depends on the supposed perlocutionary effects and on the perlocutionary effects of previous illocutionary acts.
