This article examines family language policy as a conceptual frame for examining the ideologies on swearing and children in a multilingual family environment. The case study centered on two young male children born to adolescent mothers living in extended families in socio-economically marginalised quarters in South African Cape Town. Adults link children's use of Afrikaans with swearing.
