This inquiry informs on the findings of a PhD study exploring the results of the language and content partition in Modern Language degrees on students’ growth of intercultural capacity and criticality across four universities, two in the US and two in the UK. The inquiry particularly tries to determine and contextualise two novel skills, viz. communicative criticality and savoir se reconnaître (awareness of otherness within self), which appeared from the assay of the interview data.
