This paper proposes an assay of empathically designed replies in Dutch telephone counseling, based on 36 calls from the Alcohol and Drugs Info Line. It states that counselors' emphatic replies to clients' ‘emotion discourse’ unlock advice series that differ in the degree to which they handle the client’s uttered feelings as effectual.
