M. presents reasons for accepting a particular type of logical notation for the interpretations underlying natural language utterances, from the perspective of natural language processing. On this basis he discusses linguistic and philosophical approaches to reference and definite description, and he considers solutions to problems of interpreting the scope of quantification.
