Requests and invitations pertain to the group of directives; speakers use directives to get other people to do things. This paper centers on authentic requests and invitations for (academic) service. Requests commonly profit the requester and have a cost to the hearer who meets the requests. Invitations commonly profit the hearer and have a cost to the inviter. This paper displays that invitations to perform service are more like requests than real invitations. Employing invitations to perform requests is one type of request moderation.
