This paper shows the interest of the more implicit view of implicature to the assay of epistemic signaling in academic writing, via an empirical method. Using a corpus of scientific writing from the area of genetics, a prolix assay of propositions holding the string mutations in the gene encoding is limned. It is claimed that the results of this assay match more with the theory of implicature than that of hedging as the model of claims's expression and nuancing in genetics.
