Annotation
This paper explores the interpersonal functions of two English reportative adverbs: reportedly and allegedly. It fixes the contexts in which they signal distinct types of attribution (acknowledgement and distancing), and identifies any additional functions they execute. Reportedly acts as a marker of attribution, both neutral and distancing. Allegedly is used to cross interlocutor claims. Allegedly deals with the right to claim knowledge.
