Annotation

Many poems can be read as transferring symbolic, allegorical meanings, as, for example, the poem “Diving into the Wreck,” by Adrienne Rich. Ordinary readers (here: university students) can easily derive allegorical meanings from reading poems. Even when they are forced toward reading poems in a literal way, they still automatically derive allegorical readings. Allegories are partly grasped via embodied simulation processes.
