This paper uses natural spoken dialogues between collocutors sharing a high intimacy level, to explore trends in affirmative replies in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The echoic nature of BP affirmative replies relies on epistemic commitment. Non-echoic replies have conventionalized specific discourse functions. The paper presumes a historical pathway from echoic to non-echoic reply use.
