Existential epistemic modals transfer discourse concessivity. This is discerned for Italian future, English ‘may/might’ and French ‘peut-être’. This paper defies the idea of a speech act modality and distancing as part of the meaning of the modal. The assay utilizes the alternatives presented by the modals and their interaction with ‘but’. Pragmatic arguing per absurdum is proposed.
