This paper presents an innovative approach to pragmatics that escapes from the individual as the focus. To make this shift, it uses the Japanese philosophical approach known as ba and basho. Ba theory thinks of interactive context as an integrated whole, and constitutes a way of reconsidering context which lies at the heart of pragmatics. Two extracts of interactive discourse are assayed and interpreted from ba theory.
