This paper explores video recordings of members of one multilingual family who commune employing a voice translation application running on a mobile phone (MP). Participation is built via all parties' collaborative efforts. The presence and use of a MP changes the participation framework. Filling animator and principal roles lends a mobile phone app participant status. Collocutors use an app's affordances to produce participation. A mobile phone app can be handled as a participant or as an object.
